About
Automatic translation.
Atlas of Aid gathers in one place public data on international non-governmental organisations and development cooperation organisations: how large they are, where they work, who funds them, and how they have changed over time.
Why
Information about NGOs exists, but it is scattered across dozens of national registers, technical databases such as IATI, and the annual reports of individual organisations, each with different rules, currencies and definitions. Existing directories mostly tell you who exists and where they are based. Atlas of Aid tries to tell you how much they matter, where they operate and how they have changed, putting the data on the same scale and always indicating where it comes from.
What we do
- We bring together official and open sources: charity registers, tax filings, lists of cooperation agencies, IATI, donor data (European Union, OCHA, government cooperation agencies), Wikidata, annual reports.
- We recognise the same organisation across different sources, using registration numbers.
- We reconstruct the families of organisations (Oxfam, Save the Children, MSF…), made up of many national entities.
- We check data quality and hide clearly wrong values, noting this on the profile page.
- We update the data automatically every night, when sources change; the manually curated parts, such as families and thematic pages, we review when new documents are published.
- We dedicate thematic pages to individual topics, such as sea rescue, with the organisations that matter and contextual data.
Who we are
Atlas of Aid is a project of Proteggimi S.r.l. and is part of the OpenDataView family of sites, dedicated to making public data readable. We do not receive funding from the organisations described, we do not host advertising, and we do not sell personal data.
Neutrality
The site does not pass judgement on organisations: it reports data, with its source and its limits. The figures do not measure the effectiveness or quality of an organisation's work, but its economic size and its presence in the world.
